Liverpool edge Chelsea 6–5 in shootout after 1–1 Carabao Cup draw
Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a 1–1 Anfield draw with Chelsea and a 6–5 penalty-shootout victory on 28 October 2026 in England, early 29 October in Thailand. Joe Gomez converted before Wesley Fofana missed the decisive next kick.
Both regulation-time goals came from penalties. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead after a foul on Moises Caicedo. Fofana’s handball then gave Cody Gakpo the opportunity to equalise before half-time.
Neither team scored after the interval. Giorgi Mamardashvili made important saves, while Mike Penders protected Chelsea’s goal. Liverpool’s report records five successful kicks from each side’s first seven attempts before the Gomez conversion and Fofana miss settled the tie.
Supporters on Liverpool’s website voted Trey Nyoni the team’s Player of the Match. That is a club fan poll, distinct from an organiser’s award. The 6–5 figure describes the shootout, while the regulation match score remained 1–1.
