Solana prepares Alpenglow consensus migration for 21 October
Solana is approaching a change to how validators agree that a block is final. The Solana Foundation’s upgrade page targets Alpenglow for epoch 1064, expected to begin on 21 October 2026 around 15:00 UTC, or 22:00 in Thailand. Anza’s rollout page also lists mainnet-beta for 21 October.
Checked on 19 October, the official status still shows mainnet as Not activated, with testnet and devnet active. The target is roughly 150-millisecond finality instead of TowerBFT’s approximately 12.8 seconds. This is a network-dependent expectation, not a guaranteed constant or the interval between newly produced blocks.
The first phase uses Votor for direct validator votes and aggregate certificates; Rotor’s block-distribution changes come later. Operators should consult the readiness checklist. It specifies an Agave-4.3.0-based client and at least 0.8 SOL above the rent-exempt minimum in the vote account for the VAT fee. Firedancer and Frankendancer are unsupported during migration.
The upgrade changes consensus rather than transaction formats or fee mechanics. Users should follow live status before assuming completion and avoid anyone requesting a SOL swap for an upgrade. Technical progress guarantees neither token prices nor returns; digital assets and network migrations retain material risks.
