Electrum 4.8.3 brings a security update for Bitcoin wallet users
Electrum disclosed a high-severity vulnerability on 24 October 2026. The patched 4.8.3 release was tagged on 23 October, with binaries released the following day. Users of earlier versions should check their software and obtain the update from the project.
The release notes describe a high-severity issue in which a malicious server could replace a newly broadcast transaction and try to trick the user into using Replace-by-Fee on it. This describes the disclosed risk; it does not establish that every user has lost funds.
Electrum directs users to obtain software from electrum.org and verify its GPG signatures. Check the address carefully, avoid files supplied through advertisements or supposed private support, and keep wallet recovery information confidential.
Updating addresses the problems covered by this release, rather than guaranteeing protection against every threat. Crypto assets also carry price, fraud and private-key-management risks. This is a software-security report and does not recommend buying or selling Bitcoin.
