NASA plans Artemis III systems tests in Earth orbit before a 2028 lunar return
NASA outlined its route back to the Moon at a briefing on 23 October 2026. Artemis III is planned to carry four astronauts into low Earth orbit in 2027 to test systems needed for future lunar landings.
The agency identifies Artemis IV as the first Artemis surface mission within its 2028 lunar-return objective. The near-Earth test and the landing mission have different roles; Artemis III should not be described as next year’s lunar landing.
Administrator Jared Isaacman and other agency leaders presented the acceleration plans at Kennedy Space Center. For Thai readers, the central point is the need to test equipment before more distant and complex operations.
