Astronomy Picture of the Day

NASA marks Swift’s legacy after its return to Earth’s atmosphere
NASA revisited the legacy of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in its November 6, 2026 Astronomy Picture of the Day. The agency had confirmed that Swift re-entered Earth’s atmosphere over North Sumatra, Indonesia, on November 4 at 7:39 a.m. EST, equivalent to 7:39 p.m. in Thailand. Its service lasted almost 22 years.
Launched in 2004, Swift used three telescopes operating at different wavelengths to investigate gamma-ray bursts and other rapidly changing phenomena. Its original prime mission was planned for two years. Swift’s continuing observations and alerts subsequently helped other observatories coordinate follow-up studies.
The featured mosaic was made in 2018 from UVOT observations; it does not show re-entry. The spacecraft illustration is also a NASA visualisation. NASA expected most of the observatory to burn up but said some components might survive. The illustrations therefore cannot establish that every component disintegrated or identify where any debris landed.
