US Moves Toward New Spectrum Auction to Expand Direct-to-Device Satellite Services
The US Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote on 29 October 2026 on whether to advance a new spectrum auction supporting direct-to-device satellite services. The policy aims to reduce mobile dead zones, especially in rural and remote areas.
The proposal includes auctioning 25 MHz of spectrum and updating rules for next-generation satellite connectivity. Unlike traditional satellite phones, direct-to-device systems are designed to let ordinary smartphones connect to satellites when terrestrial networks are unavailable.
The vote is a regulatory step, not an immediate nationwide launch. Operators would still need licences, interference safeguards and proof of reliable service. Even so, the proposal highlights intensifying competition between mobile carriers and satellite operators.
