SEC Innovation Exemption Opens a Conditional Path for Tokenized US Stock Trading
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has issued temporary, conditional exemptive relief allowing certain tokenized securities venues to test onchain trading of National Market System stocks through approved structures. The Innovation Exemption also includes a request for public comment.
A tokenized stock should not automatically be treated like an ordinary cryptocurrency. Investors must examine whether the token carries the same legal rights as the underlying share, who provides custody, how settlement works and whether assets can be transferred away from the platform.
The exemption enables experimentation but does not guarantee price, liquidity or safety. Risks include technology failures, counterparty exposure, regulatory change and possible price differences between a token and its referenced security. This article is not investment advice.
